According to Hindu mythology, this temple has a deep connection with the story of Lord Kartikeya, the son of Lord Shiva. The story is mentioned in one of the eighteen Hindu Puranas which is also an interesting and worth knowing.
As majority of us knows the famous story of demon Tarakasur and how shri Kartikeya killed the demon upon request of all deva and innocent people. But later, he felt guilty because Tarakasur was a great devotee of Lord Shiva and he asked the gods if there was a way to remove from this guilt.
Lord Vishnu told him, “You have done a noble act by killing a demon who has killed many innocent people. But if you still feel guilty, then worship Lord Shiva by installing Shivalingas.”
Following Lord Vishnu’s advice, Kartikeya asked Vishwakarma, the divine architect, to create three special Shivalingas. He then placed these Shivalingas in three different places and performed rituals to worship Lord Shiva. These places later became known as Pratigyeshwar, Kapaleshwar, and Kumareshwar.
While worshipping at Kapaleshwar, Kartikeya sprinkled holy water on the Shivalinga and prayed for the peace of Tarakasur’s soul. He also offered sesame seeds and said, “May my offerings reach Tarakasur and bring him peace.”
Through this act of devotion, Kartikeya was freed from his guilt.
