If you like mysterious places, you should visit Kuldhara during your trip to Jaisalmer. Kuldhara is a historical, abandoned village located around 18 km from Jaisalmer and will hardly take half hour by road. Accordingly local, earlier over 40 families of Paliwal Brahmins were living in this village. One night, the entire village was mysteriously abandoned in the 19th century. The ruins of this entire village are still there and attract tourists around the world. According to my guide, there are over 70 such villages in the same area which were completely abandoned at that night.
The most popular story is about an unkind ruler named Salim Singh, the minister of Jaisalmer. He wanted to marry the daughter of the village head against her determination. To protect their self-respect and avoid the ruler's unkindness, the villagers decided to leave Kuldhara and the nearby villages. It is believed that they placed a curse on the village before leaving, making it impossible for anyone in the future.
Since then, Kuldhara has remained empty, and people believe it is haunted. Visitors can still see the remains of houses and streets, giving a sight of what life might have been like before the village was empty. Today, Kuldhara is a popular tourist attraction, with a sense of mystery that attracts many people who want to learn about its strange history.
