The Kargil War Memorial, also known as the Drass war memorial or the Vijaypath, is a popular war memorial that has been erected by the Indian Army. Located between Dras and Kargil region in Jammu & Kashmir, the memorial has been built in the memory of the martyrs of the 1999 Kargil war that was fought between India and Pakistan.
The memorial is located in the foothills of Tololing Hill and is located at a distance of about 5 km from the famous Tiger Hill. Both these peaks along with some others were captured back by the brave Indian soldiers from Pakistan during the Kargil war. This popular site is frequented by a lot of travelers who travel on the Srinagar Kargil highway that connects Srinagar and Leh.
The epic memorial situated in the lap of the splendid hills and peaks of Dras region has a wall dedicated to the soldiers who laid their lives for the nation during the 1999 war. The sandstone wall has the inscriptions of the martyr's names on it. The Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated at this site every year on the 26th of July. Simultaneously, the Prime Minister pays tribute to the soldiers at the ‘Amar Jawan Jyoti’ and war memorial at the India Gate in New Delhi.
The visitors can also pay tribute to the martyrs here which is a splendid experience. A small 20 minute movie about the war and the laying down of the memorial is also shown here to those who are interested. The army personnel also narrate the history of the Kargil war and the proud moment when the regions were captured back from the enemies. The narration itself gives Goosebumps to the listeners and makes them proud of their valiant army men. There is also a museum around maintained by the Indian Army.
Every patriot traveling to the region should visit the place as it makes the visitors relive the memories of Operation Vijay.
