Karakoram (Nubra Shyok) Wildlife Sanctuary & National Park is one of such rare high-altitude wildlife sanctuaries in the world located in the Karakoram range within the Indian Union territory of Ladakh. The Wildlife Warden in Kargil, Ladakh, manages the Karakoram Wildlife Sanctuary, which was established in 1987. It is approximately 5,000 square kilometers in size (500,000 ha). The World Conservation Monitoring Centre has designated it as an IUCN protected area (category IV). The Sanctuary is well known for its diverse landscape, featuring snow-covered peaks, alpine fields, deep ravines, and the presence of rare flora and fauna.
There are many species found within the sanctuary including the snow leopard, Himalayan brown bear, Himalayan wolf, ibex (Wild goat), wild blue sheep (Bharal), musk deer, red fox, Himalayan marmot, mountain weasel, lynx (wild cat), Ladakhi urial, wild yak, and many others. Also many bird species such as the Himalayan snowcock, Himalayan vulture, Himalayan monal, Himalayan rubythroat, Golden eagle, booted eagle, white-winged redstart, tufted duck, and hill pigeon. Additionally, the sanctuary is home to various reptiles like the banded racer, Ladakh ratsnake (Elaphe hodgsoni), and kukri snake.
The Karakoram Wildlife Sanctuary is rich in alpine vegetation, medicinal plants, cold desert flora, endemic and rare species, and glacier vegetation. CP Kala has discovered fifteen rare and endangered medicinal plant species within the sanctuary, distributed across different habitat types. Notable among these are Bergenia stracheyi, Hyoscyamus Niger, Ephedra gerardiana, and Arnebia euchroma all of which are threatened but medicinally important plants.
