The Wayanad district of Kerala’s Edakkal Caves are well-known for their ancient petroglyphs some of which are over 8000 years old. These naturally occurring rock shelters which are situated on Ambukuthi Hill at an elevation of roughly 1200 meters above sea level provide insight into early human life through their carvings of tools, animals, and unintelligible symbols. A large rock wedged between two larger rocks creates a unique geological formation that is not a typical cave. Trekking requires climbing up around 400 stairs to reach the caves.
Edakkal Caves are well known for their old rock carvings. These caves were found in 1890 by Fred Fawcett while seeking and they contain carvings from the Neolithic period which began about 6000 BCE. These carvings and various styles suggest that the caves resided at various points in time. Interestingly some of the symbols discovered here are similar to those of the civilization of the Indus Valley suggesting potential cultural attractions.
