History:

The oldest zoo in India was founded in 1875 during British rule and is a popular tourist destination in Kolkata, West Bengal. German electrician Carl Louis Schwendler started it as a private menagerie and on May 1, 1876, it was made public. It has developed into a vibrant conservation area over time contributing to Kolkata’s rich cultural legacy.
