A wise man did say that love does go beyond boundaries. If you are wondering whether Valentine’s Day is about exquisite couple holiday packages, candle light dinners or a day that personifies romance, then perhaps this story could change your mind.
While many people crowd around flower and gift shops on February 14, a group of divers decided to express their feelings towards the love of their lives differently! Any guesses as to who or what they love the most?
These men and women of Bond Safari, Thiruvanthapuram had ‘suited-up’ to conduct a cleaning drive so as to keep the ocean the bed plastic free. They recently organized an under water wedding in Kerala and now this incidentally, the first ocean clean-up drive in the country. Adorning their diving gear, they began exploring the ocean bed and began collecting non-biodegradable wastes, plastic bags etc. Thereby, assuring the people of a better and cleaner times at the beach.
The movement was meant to create a certain degree of awareness among the local community regarding the dangers of plastic. It also threw light upon the harm caused to aquatic eco-system due to the callous disposal of wastes.
“About 60 percent of the earth’s oxygen comes from the oceans. It is pitiful to see how many take the ocean for granted and continue to dump toxic wastes, including plastic. Researchers have also said that unless we act now, there would be more plastic in the ocean that fish by 2020. Hence, we choose to do things differently this year. We decided to show our love towards one our most precious water bodies, by doing our part to keep it clean in the days to come,” said Jackson Peter, MD, Bond Safari.
